Taking a trip back down memory lane to understand where product has come from
The story of product management and its history
Modern product management started in the 1930s at Procter & Gamble and focussed on brand management and elements of what we now recognise as “product”.
Watch a few episodes of Mad Men to get a gist of it! Lots of meeting customers over scotch, back slapping and pretty marketing materials. Outside of Don Draper and his cult following, it did shine the focus quite rightly on making decisions as close to the customer as possible.
As the US advertising and branding sector flourished it became clear that the management of products had two distinct features.
The customer-facing product team who were more aligned to Don Draper and his team
The internally P&L focussed, delivery orientation, that would have driven Don to the whiskey bar far earlier than he already frequented it.
This led to the internal customer product roles evolving, which was a positive recognition of the different skillsets and value required.
Unfortunately as time progressed many product functions became sub-servant and reported into c-suite such as technology, sales and marketing. As a result, the strategy of the product function mirrored that of the area and not the customer it represents. Just so we are clear, this IS NOT the optimal way to build products, service the market and excite customers! #BadProductTrend
Recently there has been a breakthrough in #GoodProductTrend, where Product Management has become recognised as a defined c-level function of it’s own. Having full control over strategy, ROI, with a clear focus on customer centricity has been key to placing product at the centre of these forward looking companies.
Companies in the digital space are taking the lead on this through their own vision or a gentle nudge from someone in the know, like us here at My Product Path.
There are a number of important factors that have accelerated this change which we will discuss in future blogs. For now, whet your appetite via a few hashtags and a Mad Men clip! #productled #riseofthecpo
